Family Business Models From Around The World
Family businesses are the dominant form of business organization throughout the world.
Given the many cultures and regions that exist, growing empirical evidence suggests that “one
size does not fit all.” Appropriately, different models of family businesses exist in different
regions. While a growing body of knowledge about these differences exists, they tend to be
centered on a few cultures (e.g., Anglo) and are dispersed throughout a wide array of publication
outlets. The purpose of this project is to assemble and publish a Compendium of
family businesses models for each of ten different cultures from around the world. This
Compendium is intended to be a useful resource for scholars, students, practitioners, and policy
makers, containing both "classic" (previously published) and new (as yet unpublished) work.
The Compendium comprises of eleven volumes, encompassing ten different cultural clusters of the world and
a special volume on gender in family business. The GLOBE framework* is used for classifying the cultural clusters into ten groups.

A paper that evaluated the orthodox definition of family business for cultural sensitivity inspired this Compendium project. An abridged version of this paper "Exploring the Construct of Family Business in the Emerging Markets" will be published in the International Journal of Business and Emerging Markets. In this paper, family business models in four regions were compared - Latin America, Southern Asia, Eastern Europe, and Middle East. A copy of this paper can be downloaded here.
The compendium has been published by the Icfai University Press, India. Icfai University Press publishes books in
the areas of finance, management and allied areas with a special focus on emerging
and frontier areas. These books seek to provide in one place a retrospective as well
as prospective view of the contemporary developments in the environment with
emphasis on general and specialized branches of knowledge and applications.
